The Poorest of the Poor

The people of this area suffer from extreme poverty. They often suffer from insufficient food security, lack of running water, access to plumbing, and proper drainage of the area. During downpours the mud slides down the mountain and into the main street. The dump is smelly, dangerous and unregulated, which creates various hazards and chemical exposure. The sun is hot while working at the dump and many people do not have access to fresh water. The women of the sewing class have either worked at the dump, have relatives that work at the dump or live in the crowded ghettos that lack adequate housing, sanitation, or living conditions.
Many people suffer from diabetes because they eat unhealthy food and lack proper medical facilities. It is difficult to travel away from the dump area for most people. Most people associated with the dump scrounge for recyclable materials to sell because they have no other source of income.
